hello!

I’m Lauren and I’m so glad you’re here. You’ll find book recs as well as bits and pieces of my every day life.

August Wrap-Up

August Wrap-Up

Between closing on our house and moving across the country, I didn’t read as much as I might have otherwise but I’m still grateful to have finished four books.

HEY HUN: SALES, SISTERHOOD, SUPREMACY, AND THE OTHER LIES BEHIND MULTILEVEL MARKETING - I had a love/hate relationship with this book. As someone who has been dangerously close to getting sucked into beauty counter/young living, I found this FASCINATING. I wish that she’d gone into more depth and detail in certain sections - there’s one part where she skips a ton and it’s pretty jarring. She acknowledged her privilege and complicity and it still rubbed me wrong at times.

HAPPINESS FALLS - I liked MIRACLE CREEK but I enjoyed this next novel by Kim even more. As a speech-language pathologist I found the communication aspect and Angelman Syndrome representation both interesting and handled well. I tried to read several books after finishing FOURTH WING and this was the only one to fully capture my attention and break my slump.

BETTER THAN THE MOVIES - What a SWEET book this was. If you love romcom movies or YA love stories, this is for you! It reminded me slightly of TELL ME THREE THINGS (a favorite of mine!) and I just loved it. Shout out to Kristen for the great rec.

THE CENTRE - This was one I heard about from the Novel Pairings podcast and happened to stumble across it on the new shelf when I was registering for a new library card. I will say that this book was not for me and I finished and still wasn’t really sure what I read. Definitely an instance in which I had a book club to discuss it with but you won’t find me recommending this one.
